5 out of 5 stars Sweet memories of the 1960s and an age of REAL childhood   November 20, 2009

I bought this for my sister-in-law who was of primary school age in the 1960s, and spent a long time reading it myself(!) If contains pictures from the original Ladybird books and has played around with some text from the original books in an imaginative way. There are also articles written by well-known personalities who would be children or young parents at the time. Great for those aged 40+ who remember a time when children (and I have 2 at primary school now) were allowed to actually BE children and not treated as small adults which they are certainly not. Let the imagination dream on....

A delightful book that transports you back in time with just it's pictures alone.

You'll probably bore everyone in the near vicinity with your cries of "Ooooh I remember that one?" and "Do you remember...?" But the fun thing is, everyone had different favourites and there's something in here for everyone.

I was slightly disappointed that not all the front covers of books were included, as I'd liked to have seen pictures of more of my own particular favourites. But...lots ARE there and all the books are listed so if you've not quite remembered the title of one, this will clarify your memory.

An enjoyable trip down memory lane from pretending games and school milk with straws, to making things and junior science!

This is a really self-indulgent treat for anyone who was a child in the 60s or 70s. At amazon's special price it's also incredibly good value for money. The book is packed with original illustrations from Ladybird books covering everything from What to look for in Winter through to Winston Churchill! As the content is in a fairly random order (not chronological or by type of subject), "Boys and Girls" is a book to flick through and stop at whatever catches your eye. It's an amazing feeling to be confronted again by pictures that you haven't seen for 40 years.

While I'd give the book 5 stars for its original content and the concept, I do find it slightly let down by the current day additions. These consist of contributions from various children of the 50s, 60s and 70s with their reminiscences - which are mixed - plus short essays on subjects such as School or The Seaside which I don't find particularly insightful and finally, what seem to be "soundbite" reminiscences accompanying some of the illustrations. These "soundbites" are a bit odd: firstly, it's not immediately clear that they are NOT the original text and they don't really add anything for me - the original pictures really do speak for themselves.

Despite the criticisms, I'd like to thank the compilers and publishers for bringing out this book - it's made at least one middle-aged girl very happy!

Unless you're aged 80 with the reasoning ability of an ant.

There is nothing in this book that you couldn't write yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Ladybird, Ladybird, fly off the shelves   November 11, 2007

This is a magnificent book. As the book says, everyone has a favourite Ladybird. Chances are it will get a mention in this publication, along with ones you read as a child but will have all but forgotten. Gorgeous illustrations (enlarged from the originals)and quotes from the texts in their original typeface, plus additional comments in non-Ladybird typeface that will bring memories of the times flooding back. My friends' faces light up with happy recognition when I pass this book to them, my husband and I compete to read it, and my little three year old is entranced by it. Even my father can remember the books from when he used to read them to me at bedtime, and we sat around the table today reminiscing over the pictures about the good old days (but were they as good as the illustrations make out?) Such fun. A brilliant present for anyone who read the books as a child, particularly for us 30-50 year olds who might be considered as difficult to buy for. Well done Ladybird, this is a winner. Let's have some fascimile editions of the original Ladybird books soon, please.
